Common Rose pests & diseases

Roses, like any other living thing are liable to attack by harmful organisms.

A healthy thriving rose bush if able to withstand the effects of harmful attack but there is now way to completely stop rose troubles from your garden.

Here is a brief glossary of rose pests and diseases.

Rose Pests

Aphids: Small, sap-sucking insects that cluster on new growth, causing distorted leaves and buds.

Japanese Beetles: Metallic green beetles that chew on rose petals and leaves, creating ragged holes.

​

Leaf-rolling Sawfly: Larvae that roll and consume rose leaves, leading to significant defoliation.

​

Spider Mites: Tiny arachnids that cause stippled, yellowing leaves and fine webbing on roses.

​

Thrips: Minute insects that feed on flowers and leaves, causing discoloration and deformed blooms.

​

Scale Insects: Hard-shelled pests that attach to stems and leaves, sucking sap and weakening the plant.

​

Cane Borers: Insects that bore into rose canes, causing dieback and weakening the plant structure.

​​

Rose Midges: Tiny flies whose larvae damage flower buds, preventing them from opening.

​

Caterpillars: Various species that chew on rose leaves, creating holes and ragged edges.

​

Gall Wasps: Insects that cause galls (swollen growths) on rose stems, affecting plant health.

Woolly Aphids: Aphids covered in a white, waxy secretion that form woolly colonies on rose stems.

Whiteflies: Small, white-winged insects that suck sap from the underside of leaves, causing yellowing and wilting.

Rose diseases

Black Spot: A fungal disease causing round, black spots on leaves, leading to yellowing and premature leaf drop.

​

Powdery Mildew: A fungal infection appearing as a white, powdery coating on leaves, stems, and buds, distorting plant growth.

​

Downy Mildew: Fungal disease causing purple or brownish spots on leaves, accompanied by a fuzzy greyish mold on the undersides.

​

Rust: A fungal disease that causes orange or rust-colored pustules on the undersides of leaves, leading to defoliation.

​

Canker: Areas of dead tissue on rose canes caused by various fungal pathogens, leading to dieback.

​

Botrytis Blight: A fungal disease causing grey mold on flowers, buds, and leaves, often resulting in blight and decay.

​

Mosaic Virus: Viral disease characterized by yellow patterns or mottling on leaves, leading to weakened growth.

Crown Gall: A bacterial infection causing tumor-like swellings on the roots, crowns, and stems of roses, hindering nutrient and water uptake.
